UXC Consulting finds Australian businesses need to either compete against Cloud or embrace it

Melbourne, Australia, 10 November 2011

Only 4.5 per cent of Australian businesses have the cloud service model built into their IT Service Management (ITSM) framework according to a recent survey conducted by UXC Consulting.

ITSM focuses on how to best serve the business and the end-users, who are increasingly using a mix of company-owned and personal computers like netbooks and media tablets for work. These devices are accessing services delivered via various delivery models and providers.

According to UXC Consulting Director Emerging Technology & Innovation David Favelle, the last 12-months has seen a shift in the way businesses are consuming or are planning to consume IT services. Cloud computing is an option all businesses are looking at, and most are making prudent decisions based on their current technology investment, security and risk appetite and other drivers such as agility, flexibility and the ability to correlate business outcomes with the direct costs.

“Throughout this year our clients have recognised the inevitablility of cloud computing,” said Favelle. “Many businesses have recognised that cloud technologies have already become part of their existing IT Service portfolio, but the next steps will require deeper architectural consideration and impact assessment on the current IT operating model and workforce skills.”

“This survey feedback indicates that the IT industry needs to accelerate development of some core ITSM disciplines,” said Favelle. “Cloud computing is a disruptive technology shift with a growing inevitability, and it exposes an IT department’s ability to deliver an end-to-end service offering. In house processes such as financial management, capacity management, information security management and availability management are not up to speed if you compare it to SaaS or IaaS offerings. Cloud is as much a call to action for our on-shore IT industry as it is a new delivery model.”

The survey polled Australian enterprise-level organisations and in regard to their existing ITSM framework, and trending topics including support for cloud-based services, integration and the adoptions of mobile devices and BYO computing into the organisation.

UXC Consulting’s survey was conducted in conjunction with the annual IT Service Management Forum. Of the 120 responses, 68 per cent of the people surveyed worked for a company with more than 1,000 people, with an additional 32 per cent working for an organisation with over 5000 employees. The targeted survey attracted strong industry feedback, with 74 per cent of respondents being a decision maker or IT influencer within their organisation.

The itSMF is an annual three day conference that covers what ITSM offers local enterprises in terms of leveraging technology to achieve business objectives and best practice IT processes.
